Louis Comfort Tiffany once remarked, “I can’t get the color of this azalea. The shape—yes. The color—no. Chemical science cannot produce the exact tone. I can only capture the shade of the flower in a certain light. What is to be done?” Perhaps the flower held the secret but refused to reveal it. Tiffany cultivated both Japanese and native azalea species in vibrant pink and red hues at his Briars estate. As the final bloom of spring in the Northeast, azaleas were beloved by botanical collectors, especially for their role in Japanese garden design.
