Rembrandt Bugatti "Éléphant de l'Inde au repos" Bronze Sculpture
Bugatti’s "Éléphant de l'Inde au repos" also known as Indian Elephant in Repose exudes a sense of calm and majesty. The elephant stands tall, its massive body relaxed and still. Its short tusks protrude from beneath its trunk, which is gently curled at the tip, hanging just above the ground. The small ears, typically fanned out when alert, now droop lazily. The elephant’s half-closed eyes reflect a serene and peaceful state. The texture of its rough, wrinkled skin catches the light, emphasizing the deep folds and creases that speak of its age and wisdom.
Éléphant de l'Inde au repos stands out as one of Bugatti’s most impressive representations of this regal mammal. In a career that spanned little more than a dozen years, Rembrandt Bugatti emerged as a singular figure in modern sculpture. His distinct and powerfully modern vision bridged traditional sculptural and animalier techniques with innovative methodologies. Rather than offering a generalized depiction, this sculpture is a deeply moving portrait of an individual: Rachel, the famous elephant of the Jardin des Plantes. Immensely popular with visitors, Rachel was known for a charming trick in which she would stand on her hind legs and beg for food. This iconic pose was later immortalized on the hood ornaments Bugatti designed for his brother’s eponymous sports cars. In this work, Bugatti depicts Rachel in her more natural state, at rest, capturing her elegant profile as she appeared in countless postcards. Without performing any tricks, she stands still, allowing her natural poise to be immortalized.
