"Iris at Dawn" is a French Art Nouveau gilt and dark-patinated bronze sculpture by Charles Louchet of a gilded woman reaching for an iris. The iris is made of porcelain and is highly detailed in its representation. The woman is fully nude, face down, as she reaches across the small suggested stream with her upper body toward the iris.

Curator's Notes
The position the woman assumes is reminiscent of artistic representations of the ancient Greek myth of Tantalus. Tantalus was a King condemned to living on a small patch of land surrounded by water, unable to drink from the source and unable to reach the fruit trees beyond the water’s surface. However, the title, Iris At Dawn, may also suggest that the woman reaching toward the iris is the light of dawn itself as her gilded form mimics the sun’s golden glow.
