Curator's Notes
The firm was founded in Milan in 1740 by the goldsmith Contardo Buccellati, and soon became a mainstay of the carriage trade. In the late 19th century, Contardo's descendant Mario completed an apprenticeship with the jewelers Beltrami and Besnati, and opened a salon close to La Scala. He soon made a reputation among intellectual and artistic circles, and established further workshops in 1925 in Rome, and four years later in Florence, to service his growing clientele. Mario was experimental, exploring Renaissance techniques and expressing his interest in rich textiles such as damask and Venetian lace, as seen in this jewel.
