Curator's Notes
A high valley in Kashmir, which lies between the Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountains, was the source of the most highly coveted sapphires in the world. Both per karat, and as specimen stones, these sapphires have achieved the highest prices at auction among desirable sapphires from any other region. Kashmir sapphires retain their blue glow in the light of any time of day. The deposit, first discovered in the 1880s, was mined out within five years, and the last attempts to exploit the area in the 1930s resulted in limited success, making it likely that these gems will remain extremely scarce.
