Created in the 1950s, this Cartier "Lovers on a Bench" clip brooch is composed of 18K gold, coral and diamonds. It is designed as a slatted park bench with two hearts each centering a coral cabochon within a border of rose-cut diamonds. This Cartier conversation piece, designed to clip casually to jacket, sweater, hat, or handbag, is one of the firm's whimsical jeweled comments on the post-War return of romance and simple pleasures.

Made in France, this brooch may have been exported to the U.S. or Latin America for sale. Louis Cartier's son Claude, a former Olympic athlete and member of the international jet set, had become president of the New York branch in 1948. A fully bilingual entrepreneur and investor who had attended Harvard Business School, he identified opportunities in new markets such as oil rich Venezuela, where he opened Caracas boutique together with Christian Dior in the 1950s.
