Stephane Mallarme

Stephane Mallarme(1842-1898)

A French symbolist poet who inspired many musical and visual artists of his time. Mallarmé's poetry most notably inspired Claude Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. He was famed for his salons, occasional gatherings of intellectuals at his house on the rue de Rome for discussions of poetry, art, philosophy. The group became known as les Mardistes, and through it Mallarmé exerted considerable influence on the work of a generation of writers.
