French Enameled and Gilt-decorated "Papillons et Fleurons" Vase by Daum

A French enameled and gilt-decorated "Papillons et Fleurons" vase by Daum, circa 1893. The ground of the vase is gold, and is decorated with an enameled butterfly adorned by multicolored wings, and several bees humming around the vase. Two ornamental Croix de Lorraine can be seen on the upper and lower sections of the vase. The middle section of the vase is decorated with a frieze of grasshoppers. The top of the vase is gilded, and the background of the decoration was enriched by gold colored jasper. Daum was inspired by 12th-14th century enameled glass mosque lamps while designing this vase. This vase was created at the beginning of the Art Nouveau period, and it reflects the stylistic changes happening as the style was evolving. As art was adapting from the more traditional and ornamental styles of the 19th century, France was modernizing as a country. Daum embraced Lorraine's history, and incorporated the symbol of his home into this work featuring metamorphosis, change, and renaissance.

Petite Coupe Sur in Enamel and Gold by Thesmar

Petite coupe sur talon in enamel and 18 karat gold by André Fernand Thesmar (1843–1912). In original box. André Fernand Thesmar (1843-1912) was a French enameler. He is credited with bringing the style of soft-paste porcelain back into style, alongside sections with gold foil backings, in the 20th century. He also used the method of plique-à-jour, including works that were often inspired by Japanese and Chinese enameling. He showed his work at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. The floral motifs that adorn this petite coupe sur talon by André Thesmar appear to float due to the expert use of plique-à-jour, a type of enamel that has no backing so that light can shine through it like leaded glass. Thesmar's ability to create such an exceptional piece in gold and enamel shows a combination of artistry and technical genius that is very rare to come by. A similar coup sur talon is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The flaming heart and the lover's eye denote a passionate love that had ended. An English Antique 15 karat gold and oxidized silver Maltese cross brooch with diamonds. The brooch has 130 old European-cut and old mine-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of 18.00 carats. Fold down bale. Antique box. The Maltese cross, in Italy also known as the Amalfi cross, is the cross symbol associated with the Knights Hospitaller (the Knights of Malta) and by extension with the island of Malta. The cross is eight-pointed and has the form of four "V"-shaped elements, each joining the others at its vertex, leaving the other two tips spread outward symmetrically. Its design is based on crosses used since the First Crusade. The 15th Century Crusaders adopted the Cross of Malta as their insignia because its eight points represented the eight Beatitudes prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount. Those, in effect, declare (1) blessed are the poor in spirit, (2) the meek, (3) the pure, (4) the merciful, and (5) the peacemakers, (6) blessed are they that mourn, and (7) seek righteousness, and (8) blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness sake. The Cross of Malta had a religious origin but the Knights of St. John also made it their battle standard for the liberation of all men, women and children who suffered oppression. The ideals for which the original Crusaders fought parallel the principles of democracy today, freedom and justice.

Each piece was meticulously crafted, and though there are no official documents crediting George Marcus with the design of the pieces, his credits at the Boston Arts and Crafts Exhibition and later Exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design attest to his design standing.

Marcus & Co. Early-20th Century Essex Crystal and Gold Hunting Cuff Links

A pair of American cuff links composed of Essex crystals by Marcus & Co. The double sided cuff links have 4 finely executed individual reverse painted Essex Crystals. The crystals depict a jumping horse and rider, hunting dog, horse and fox head. " The technique is said to have begun in Europe, and the crystal process has been attributed to a Belgian artist named Emile Marius Pradier. Some of Pradier's early pieces were signed, which makes them particularly appealing. Such was the beginning of a treasured art form which evolved into incredible works of art in miniature. Around 1860, Thomas Cooke began making crystals for Lambeth and Company in England. The crystals gained immediate favor, and as their popularity increased, Cooke trained a student to assist him. This student - Thomas Bean - later trained his own son and subsequently his grandson in the crystal making process. Crystal carving and painting has always been a family enterprise and is one of the few art forms of modern times to develop in secrecy, being passed on from one generation to the next. Yet today, with very few artisans possessing either the knowledge or the ability to produce crystals, the process of reverse intaglio is considered to be one of the highest art forms. The popularity of these "little beauties" soared as the twentieth century began and they remained quite fashionable until the early 1930's." (Roger Widener and Thomas Walter)

Van Cleef & Arpels Diamond and Ruby Mystery Set 'Boule' Earrings

These "Boule" earrings have 136 round-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of 8.50 carats, G/H color, VS clarity, and 186 invisibly set rubies with an approximate total weight of 20.00 carats. French control marks. Additional mark: "33809". With signed Van Cleef & Arpels box. Van Cleef & Arpels patented the invisible setting in 1933. This dazzling technique consists of setting stones in such a way that no prongs are visible. At first, the invisible setting was reserved for flat pieces, such as the Minaudière precious case inspired by Florence Jay Gould. But as the technique developed, Van Cleef & Arpels began using it on more complex undulating shapes. The technique is so intricate that producing a single brooch takes no less than 300 hours work. Each faceted stone is delicately inserted onto thin gold rails less than two-tenths of a millimeter thick. Once complete, the gems appear to be entirely free-standing, creating an air of mystery. The invisible setting technique is discussed in "Van Cleef & Arpels", by Sylvie Raulet, Rizzoli, 1986, pages 117-118.

From the Ostier Sale held by Park-Bernet Galleries catalogue in 1969: A Collection of Jewelry, Designed by Marianne Ostier Ostier, Inc., one of New York's leading jewelers dealing precious-stone jewelery of original design and superb custom craftsmanship, was closed in September of this year [1969], following the death of its co-founder, Oliver Ostier. The present sale offers the entire stock of this distinguished firm. All pieces are original designs of Marianne Ostier, co-founder with her late husband of the firm and an internationally famed designer of jewelery. Of the decision to close the business, Marianne Ostier said: With the passing of my husband, I have had to devote more and more of my efforts to administrative duties. These demands of my time can no longer be met without artistic compromise which to me is unacceptable. Representing the third generation of court jewelers in Austria, Oliver Ostier came to America following the Anschluss of 1938. Shortly thereafter he founded the firm of Ostier, Inc., with his wife Marianne, a talented painter and sculptress as well as an artist in the design of jewelry. Author of Jewels and the woman , the basic primer of the art of wearing jewelry, Marianne Ostier's designs became major jewelry fashions and classics of modern designed jewelry. She is repsonsible for numerous innovations, such as the pincushion clip, the famed skin pin and free-from jewelry; she pioneered in abstract designs for jewelry and, as a sculptress, brought a new dimension to her work in jewelry design. For many years, Mrs. Ostier won the Diamond U.S.A. Award and the Diamond International Award for design excellence. The first life-time member elected to the Diamonds-International Academy, the hall of fame for modern jewelry designers, she represented the United States at the Art in Precious Jewelry exhibition at the Finch College Museum of Art in 1966, which featured the work of the foremost designers of ten countries. Among the artists, in addition to Mrs. Ostier, were Georges Braques and Salvador Dali. The exhibition and sale of Marianne Ostier Originals marks the end of an important chapter in the history of jewelry design. The catalogue of her oeuvres eloquently records her contribution toward advancing this art form. .

He was Italian, but he also liked shotguns and, because of his interest in shotguns, he had an interest in iron and metallurgy and what they did to rifles and shotguns to keep them from rusting. And the Marsh's jewelry is steel that's been treated with gun bluing. He sandblasted the steel before he gun blued it, that gives it this marvelous matte finish. And nowadays I don't think there is anything more chic than the idea of black jewelry where the diamonds and the white gold absolutely pop and these marvelous pearls that he suspended have motion...The firm closed its doors in 2001."
