Antique French Diamond, Colored Stone, and Gold Topped Silver Necklace

A French Antique 18 karat gold and silver top necklace with diamonds, peridots, grossularite garnets, pink topaz, aquamarines and chrysoberyls. The graduated, foiled colored stones are framed and spaced with rose-cut diamonds weighing approximately 4.60 carats. The closed backs are decorated with a deeply carved swirl motif. This necklace was the property of the Estate of Quincy Adams Shaw, and then by descent. He was an important businessman, having invested in copper mining. He lived in Paris in the 1850's where he became involved in the artistic world and began collecting. "Necklaces were short [in the early 19th C...Typically, they consisted of a rivière of gems...The strong emphasis on colour was further underlined by the technique of 'foiling' each coloured gem...." -Mascetti and Triossi. Antique English Amethyst and Gold Rivière Necklace

An Antique English 18 karat gold necklace with amethysts. The necklace has 16 faceted oval cut amethyst stones with a slight graduation in size, prong set in granulated gold collets, with an approximate total weight of 350 carats. A Rivière is a necklace that is comprised of gemstones of the same species that are all the same size and shape or graduate smoothly in size. Historically, the gemstones were set in separate collets and later in prong or claw mountings. The style was first popular in the late 17th century and gave the effect of a continuous, shinning stream around the neck.

An English Antique 18 karat gold necklace with turquoise, diamonds and rubies. The necklace has a body and head composed of cabochon turquoise, rose-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of .24 carat, and rubies with an approximate total weight of .10 carat. "Turquoise is also seen in profusion on necklaces in the form of the ouroboros, or snake biting its tail; like the forget-me-not this ancient symbol stressed the metaphor of eternal love." The emeralds are surrounded by 140 old mine-cut diamonds , including diamond spacers joining the clusters with an approximate total weight of 24.00 carats. With signed, fitted, antique box.
