Tiffany Glass and Bronze "Dragonfly" Chandelier

A Tiffany Studios New York "Dragonfly" glass and bronze chandelier. This elegant chandelier is composed of a choice selection of glass which makes this an exceptional example of Tiffany's iconic dragonfly lamp. The dragonflies are made up of dark green glass bodies, variegated blue glass wings and red glass eyes. The cabochon glass jewels that surround this chandelier depict emeralds, sapphires and topaz. The two top and three bottom borders are made up of various colors of rippled glass. This exciting glass composition rests upon a ground of green, green/blue and brown glass. Similar chandeliers are pictured in: Tiffany Lamps and Metalware: An illustrated reference to over 2000 models, by Alastair Duncan, Woodbridge: Suffolk: Antique Collectors' Club, 1988, p. 230, plate 891-893.

"Dragonfly" Tiffany Lamp

A Tiffany Studios New York leaded glass and patinated bronze "Dragonfly" table lamp. This shade features six dragonflies with cobalt and periwinkle bodies and pale blue wings against a grassy green ground that fades into white at the top. The upper portion of the lamp is spotted with what Tiffany called "moonstone glass" jewels that emulate adularescence, or the specific quality of iridescence that moonstones have. Each dragonfly is adorned with garnet-colored glass eyes, and on one of the dragonflies the eyes are shifted so as to make it appear as if the insect is turning its head. White mottled glass geometric upper and lower borders contain the scene within them. The shade sits atop a decorated patinated bronze base which evokes flower bulbs with overlaid scrolling bronze vines that wrap around the stem. Louis Comfort Tiffany's "Dragonfly" lamps have become so iconic and loved because the artisans who made them were not limited in color as they were when making floral and geometric shades. Here we see the background fading from a bright white to a deep green, and we can imagine that the dragonflies who adorn the lower edge of the shade are flying low across a verdant field. A similar shade is pictured in: "The Lamps of Tiffany", by Dr. Egon Neustadt, New York: The Fairfield Press, 1970, p. 105, plate 153. A similar base is pictured in: Tiffany Lamps and Metalware: An illustrated reference to over 2000 models, by Alastair Duncan, Woodbridge: Suffolk: Antique Collectors' Club, 1988, p. 74, plate 286.
