Introspective Magazine: A Mecca of Art Nouveau Gets a New Address

Introspective Magazine and 1stDibs editor Doris Athineos featured Macklowe Gallery’s gorgeous new salon-like space in a sweeping article that describes visionary dealer and President Benjamin Macklowe as a passionate proselytizer for the beauty of Art Nouveau curves.

As the mastermind behind the gallery’s move from Madison Avenue, the story goes on to have Ben explain that people have said "it’s crazy" to expand retail space in the digital era. "But we thought that if we have this much business from people who walk through our doors with what was really a ten-foot-wide window on Madison Avenue," he notes, "What’s going to happen when we have one hundred and thirty feet of wraparound frontage?"

The article represents the gallery as a gorgeous Gesamtkunstwerk featuring a "who’s who" of fin de siècle design talent, such as Louis Majorelle, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Eugène Gaillard - with breathing space to dazzle and delight. According to Ben, the relocating and expanding of the gallery reflects a boldness that is the very essence of Art Nouveau, the influential decorative style that shaped everything from Metro stations to fireplace mantels.
