Tiffany Studios New York "Bamboo" Table Lamp

Among the most harmonious of Tiffany Studios New York's compositions is the "Bamboo" lamp, comprised of a leaded glass "Bamboo" dome shade, decorated, of course, with a field of the marvelously colored stalks, and sitting atop a paired "Bamboo" base. The patinated bronze base and finial, which both naturalistically mimic both the appearance and strength of a segmented bamboo frond, supports a shade that dynamically interplays the upright nature of the bamboo stalk with the lovely, organic down-turning of its leaves in mottled green and brown glass against an opaque white ground.

While Louis Comfort Tiffany purposefully designed his bases and shades to be relatively interchangeable—creating a lovely myriad of visual combinations that would breath new life into each base and each shade as they were paired—with a select few, he created full-blown compositions by pairing of two designs which were born together. Tiffany's love of the Far East led him to plant the then-exotic bamboo at his Oyster Bay estate, and perhaps inspired him to created this lamp with such a purposeful pairing.
